Community Community Foods Mural, Installation View, Artist jack Leamy.
Designed and led by artist Jack Leamy, the Community Foods Market Mural is a collaborative effort between The Center for ArtEsteem (AHC Oakland) and Community Vision. Honoring Oakland's legacy for food justice activism, the mural is dedicated to Mother Mary Anne Wright and the Black Panther Party free breakfast program.
The Community Foods Market Mural brings together community members, residents and neighbors after a twenty year effort to have a thriving grocery store in West Oakland comes to a devastating halt. Underlining the inequity around food justice in underserved communities, the Community Foods Market Mural ignites the communities passion, resiliency and desire to reconcile the loss of their marketplace while reflecting the power of art and service.
Mother Wright was a humanitarian activist who fed over 450 people a day for almost three decades. The Black Panther Party free breakfast program met the need for child nourishment as a necessity for preparing for education. These selfless efforts to address hunger and food justice in Oakland deserve to be recognized.
The mural project site is eliciting a buzz in the community and is visited daily by many who recognize Mother Wright's image and relate passionately about how she saved lives. The building she served so many from is directly across the street from the mural site. The mural is inspiring moments of bottomless gratitude for Mother Wright who is considered a saint by thousands because of her relentless desire to feed the people and strive for the good of the people.
